Sonicwall was started in the year 1991 by two brothers Sreekanth Ravi and Sudhakar Ravi to develop Networking products like Ethernet, Hubs and other networking devices to cater primarily to the Apple market. Later they developed a network security device along with firewall and VPN software that was intended primarily to cater to the small and medium business market and named it as SonicWall which was a grand success. Further to the growing Security business the company has exited the Apple networking devices business and started to completely focus on the fast growing security market. The company has established itself as a network security company and later went on to Public by listing its company shares in the year 1999.

The company sells a range of Internet appliances primarily directed at content control and network security. These include devices providing services for network firewalls, UTMs (Unified Threat Management), VPNs (Virtual Private Network), and anti-spam for email. As per the public data available on 2011 the company had more than 130 patents and 1000 employees with offices globally. Revenues of the company stood at over $265 million with its headquarters in San Jose, California.

In the year 2012, the company has been acquired by Dell and has established itself as a formidable player in the Security market till 2016 the company has been operated under Dell after which Sonicwall has been sold by Dell to private equity firm.
